CALL:
This session aims to investigate the social, cultural and religious implications associated with the transformations of sacred space. The complex mix of ethnicities and religious practices attested in the Roman and Late Antique Galilee, provide an excellent setting for investigating material expressions of religious worship, as well as changes transpiring in the religious character of the region over time. As a case study for the transformations of sacred space, this session will focus on the religious milieu of ancient Sepphoris, combining studies of the religious diversity witnessed in the material assemblages of the city; changes in urban space from private to public, temple to church; and visual expressions of religious and cultural identity employed in the sacred architecture and its decor. Each of the studies will address the finds from Sepphoris, contextualizing them within their local Galilean and broader regional contexts. We invite to this session papers engaging urbanism, religious architecture, visual representations and material finds for the study of shifts in sacred space. We are particularly interested in studies providing insights into processes of social, cultural, political and religious changes taking place in the Eastern Mediterranean during the Roman Period and in Late Antiquity. http://www.asor.org/am/list-of-approved-sessions-2020/#sepphoris If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us:
