CALL:

Dear all, Drs. Joshua R. Hall and Jason Morris invite papers on the subject of science, technology, and technicians in ancient warfare for the International Conference in Classics and Ancient History at the Centre for Classical & Humanistic Studies, University of Coimbra, 22-25 June 2021. This panel examines the intersection of science and warfare in the Classical world. Although both the subdisciplines of ancient science and ancient military studies have seen rapid growth in the past few decades, they are rarely examined together. Thus, the purpose of this panel is to bring together scholars who have varied research backgrounds to investigate the roles science, technology, and technicians played in ancient warfare. Although many of the papers of this panel will undoubtedly cover the Greeks and Romans, we would also like proposals that look at any of the cultures that thrived in the ancient Mediterranean world broadly defined, including those of the Near East, North Africa, and the Black Sea. We are also eager to build an international panel, and encourage scholars from non-Anglophone countries to participate. Though we request papers be presented in either English or French. It is our objective to cover a wide range of topics, though we are particularly interested in speakers looking at: Architectural engineering Cartography Logistical technology Mechanical engineering Medicine and medics Naval technology and engineering Technical manuals Theoretical knowledge/approaches to warfare Again, papers of all topics are desired, and those that do not fit within one of the above suggested areas should still be submitted. We would also like potential contributors to know that it is our intention to publish an expanded versions of the papers as a substantial edited volume. All papers should be 20 minutes in length. Please send all proposals or questions to: Joshua Hall (jr.hall@ancientworldmagazine.com) Jason Morris (Claudius.caecus@gmail.com)
