The Logic and Perception of Persuasion in Ancient Stoicism - 20-21-22/05/2020, Canterbury (England)
For the Stoics, the persuasive is linked to the representation (phantasia) of an object, grasped by reason that grounds true thinking. To elucidate the nature of this link we ask three fundamental questions: What makes logical propositions and arguments persuasive? What are the mental factors that allow people to perceive something as persuasive? Is persuasion a genuine part of the Stoic taxonomy of representation? Answering these questions provides a clearer understanding of ancient Stoicism, while also enriching our understanding of the notion of persuasion today.
