CALL:

“It is our duty to fight for our freedom.

It is our duty to win.

We must love each other and support each other.

We have nothing to lose but our chains.”

- Assata Shakur

Shakur’s words are particularly poignant right now, and we must all do our part to fight for the rights and freedom of marginalized communities in this country. We must fight for and with Black people whose voices and livelihoods have been restrained for too long. We must fight for and with Indigenous people whose existence has been – and still is – violently suppressed. The Sportula feels that it is not the right time to ask for more energy from our community, and instead we want to continue to support and uplift Black and Indigenous communities directly. For this reason, we are postponing Losing Chains: Systems of Support in Classics, Ancient and Modern, our online conference, to October 17, 2020. Abstracts are now due August 22, 2020.

In the meantime, we encourage you to work with and donate to organizations and funds that directly help Black and Indigenous individuals and communities:

  • Donate to Black Queer and Trans Groups - megafund that splits your donation between various organizations (see link for full list)

  • Contribute directly to Black trans women (via GoFundMe)

  • Black Hills Legal Defense Fund

  • NDN COVID-19 Response Project

  • Support local bail funds! Support local organizations that work with Black and Indigenous communities!

Losing Chains is for classicists of all stages of their careers (from high school students to tenured professors) who self-identify as members of a group that has faced structural barriers to educational success (e.g. BIPOC*, disabled, LGBTQ+, working class, student parent, etc.)

Please send submissions and questions to: libertinopatrenatus@gmail.com

*BIPOC: Black, Indigenous, and/or a Person of Color - includes mixed people.
