CALL: call for papers online
The Eighteenth International Congress of the International Association for Neo-Latin Studies (www.ianls2021.com) is being organized by the IANLS and KU Leuven. The congress will take place from 1 to 6 August 2021 in Leuven, Belgium. It will start in Leuven with registration on Sunday evening (1 August) and will formally close with the conference dinner on Friday evening (6 August).
The theme of the Congress will be “Half a Century of Neo-Latin Studies”.
Proposals in Latin, English, French, German, Italian and Spanish on different aspects of Neo-Latin Studies are welcome. Only proposals dealing with Neo-Latin subjects will be considered. We especially welcome proposals on the history of Neo-Latin Studies in all their richness and diversity, and on new trends and promising methodologies opening new perspectives in the field.
The deadline for all proposals is 15 May 2020. Proposals should be submitted to the Second VicePresident and Chair of the Organizing Committee, Prof. Dr. Dirk Sacré, and sent as WORD e-mail attachments (ianls2021@kuleuven.be). Proposals received after the deadline will not be accepted.
The Organizing Committee will welcome three types of proposals:
(1) Proposals for individual papers
The abstract should be between 150 words minimum and 200 words maximum in length. The guidelines for abstracts can be downloaded from the website of IANLS (www.ianls.com). You will also find these guidelines at the end of this circular. Scholars are advised that the delivery time for each paper must not exceed 20 minutes. Furthermore, papers delivered at an international congress should be read slowly and clearly in order to be intelligible to an international audience. In practice, this means that papers should be no longer than ca. 2,000 words or 10,400 characters.
(2) Proposals for posters
Posters about research projects offer information in visual form and will be on exhibit for most of the congress. At a certain point, an hour will be left free of other activities so that the authors of posters can be present and answer questions. It is possible to present both a paper and a poster (but no more than one of each).
(3) Proposals for special sessions
Such sessions can focus either on the special theme of the congress or on any subject relating to NeoLatin Studies. Each session must have a clearly stated overarching theme. Proposers are responsible for organizing their sessions. For papers that are part of a special session the same guidelines apply as for individual papers. Thematic coherence of the special session will be an essential criterion in the evaluation of the proposal.
Members who want to organize special sessions can also circulate a call for papers (CfP) via the IANLS mailing list. If you want to use this opportunity, please note the following: 1. The CfP should be in one PDF-file, to be sent to the Secretary of the IANLS, Kristi Viiding (kristi.viiding@gmail.com). 2. It should contain an email address of the organizer of the special session to which a reply can be sent (IANLS cannot forward any misdirected e-mails). 3. Special sessions organized this way will go through the same evaluation process as all other proposals. 4. Please note that a CfP for a special session will be sent out in the form in which you submit it.
Scholars proposing papers and/or posters or organizing and participating in special sessions must be paid-up members of the IANLS when they send their proposal, i.e. before 15 May 2020. Those interested in sending a proposal who are not IANLS members should contact the secretary concerning membership (see also www.ianls.com > Membership > How to join the IANLS).
Those who write in a language that is not their mother tongue should have their abstract checked by a native speaker, since all approved abstracts will be published on the website. The Organizing Committee will only do a limited amount of editing. Failure to meet minimal linguistic standards can be a valid reason for rejection of the proposal. The Executive Committee is responsible for accepting or rejecting papers, posters and special sessions, and will inform the proposers by 15 October 2020.
