CALL:

Since its inception, Christian theological discourse has known moments of crisis, whether brought about by the contingent historical frameworks in which it was located or by processes internal to its dynamics of production. By offering theological actors an opportunity to re-examine their language and compelling them to discern between different possibilities for acting and thinking, crises have opened up unsuspected paths on those thinkers’ discursive horizon. Throughout the pre-modern history of Christianity, breaks of this kind have had lasting effects on its intellectual trajectory, whether by instituting orthodoxies, making convictions explicit, bringing to the fore consequential problematics, shaping novel methodological tools, or modifying the forms and spaces of theological communication.

The Department of Theology and Center for Orthodox Christian Studies of Fordham University (New York) and the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina (Buenos Aires) are hosting a virtual bilingual conference on the theme of “theology and crisis” during late antiquity and the early middle ages. We invite twenty-minute papers, to be delivered in English or Spanish, which will approach the question through case studies, theoretical reflections, or historiographic examinations. Abstracts of 200-300 words (in either English or Spanish) should be sent by October 10, 2020 to Emanuel Fiano (efiano@fordham.edu), José Carlos Caamaño (josecarcaa@uca.edu.ar), and Hernán Martín Giudice (hernanmgiudice@gmail.com). Participants will be notified of the acceptance of their proposal by October 25, 2020.
