CALL. 31.01.2021: Workshop: Sanctuaries as Spaces of Political Actions... - Heidelberg (Germany)
In our workshop we want to discuss one particular part of the Greek polis, the sanctuaries, as spaces of political actions. Most scholars agree on the importance of sanctuaries for the emergence and the continuous evolution of the Greek polis in the eastern Mediterranean from its emergence in the Archaic period to its end in Late Antiquity (DE POLIGNAC 1995; MELFI – BOBOU 2016; GALLI 2013). Historians and archaeologists have studied various sources, from material culture to urban layout, from literary sources to inscriptions, in order to explore how politics and sacredness were intertwined during the development of the polis, which is most evident in its sanctuaries. Alongside agorai, both urban and extra-urban sanctuaries offer a public space where archaeological and/or historical evidence has encouraged research on powers and relationships within and between poleis. Individuals, civic groups, associations, poleis, and other political entities could represent themselves with votive artefacts, monuments, decrees, etc. In these material and literary records one can trace a wide range of activities hosted in sanctuaries that display and negotiate power and infuence: such activities include the setting up of said monuments or stelai, the granting of asylum, processions, imperial visits, etc.

CALL:
This workshop approaches the political actions traceable in Greek sanctuaries of the eastern Mediterranean by combining different perspectives of the Classical disciplines across a broad time scale.
We believe it important to understand poleis and their evolution both synchronically and diachronically. Discussions on any period from the emergence of polis to Late Antiquity are welcomed.
In the course of the workshop, we would like to address the following questions:
§ What kind of political actions can we trace in the sanctuaries?
§ How was political power displayed in the sanctuaries?
§ How did political actions and the display of power in the sanctuaries change over time?
§ How were artefacts located, displayed, reused in sanctuaries? What messages did such locations, display, and secondary usage convey?
§ What political process had happened behind the evidence that survives to our time?
§ ...
