Workshop: Sanctuaries as Spaces of Political Actions... -24-25-26/06/2021, Heidelberg (Germany)

In our workshop we want to discuss one particular part of the Greek polis, the sanctuaries, as spaces of political actions. Most scholars agree on the importance of sanctuaries for the emergence and the continuous evolution of the Greek polis in the eastern Mediterranean from its emergence in the Archaic period to its end in Late Antiquity (DE POLIGNAC 1995; MELFI – BOBOU 2016; GALLI 2013). Historians and archaeologists have studied various sources, from material culture to urban layout, from literary sources to inscriptions, in order to explore how politics and sacredness were intertwined during the development of the polis, which is most evident in its sanctuaries. Alongside agorai, both urban and extra-urban sanctuaries offer a public space where archaeological and/or historical evidence has encouraged research on powers and relationships within and between poleis. Individuals, civic groups, associations, poleis, and other political entities could represent themselves with votive artefacts, monuments, decrees, etc. In these material and literary records one can trace a wide range of activities hosted in sanctuaries that display and negotiate power and infuence: such activities include the setting up of said monuments or stelai, the granting of asylum, processions, imperial visits, etc.
